hello ppl I’m Skye from graphic and media design. This is has been a mazzaleen. Who would have thought we experience lockdowns, a global pandemic, mandatory masks, sell out of hand sanitisers, Joe Biden becoming new president, online classes, the closing of Thortons, and so much more. Even though we experienced together as one community, we all played it differently. From when coronavirus came to the UK in November of 2019 nobody thought anything of it. It was never presented or mentioned on BBC news, and was very small topic in social media. And then once March 2020 came, who would have thought it would take over everything? My practise had never been so rinsed. Whether it was to keep people peace of mind from creating posters and promoting mental health campaigns, the track and trace app in order to keep people safe, re designing social areas to maintain social distancing and one way systems, designing award shows and music performances to become a virtual involvement, design, science and technology have became the backbone behind all this chaos. All the while trying to maintain and attain sustainability. When I did the Selfridges project, I have become more aware of sustainability. The S word always been flying around and I never bothered about it and never took interest until I HAD to. Only til I analysed the Selfridges website did I realise it is a big thing. I noticed they had developed a lot of resources such as the content they made representing how they are reforming themselves, their aims they have set to meet in the future, and their material on their Youtube channel. I had to educate myself real quick in order to be on course with other peers and before I knew it I knew terms such as a up cycling, repurposing, circular economy = ppl I was on a role. It made me think a lot more about how we need to reform ourselves in order to keep this planet alive in order to see our grandchildren (don’t get me wrong each to their own). David Attenborough has been saying it from the start of the Gen Z era and we need to be the ones to implement it if we intend to see our future. During my research and upon blogs I follow, I realised there is so much more to do in order to make this movement stick. Small changes such as McDonald's changing to paper straws, Pret a Manger getting rid of their plastic cutlery, awful but its for the greater good. I have learnt numerous fashion brands are becoming ‘eco friendly’ with the materials they use for their garms. My family ordered HelloFresh meal kit subscription service where we received box of ingredients alongside the recipes to cook our own meals. The packaging of the food was reusable which were pleased to see and the whole process was eco friendly. Food deliveries to houses has been very important as people are still anxious to enter the world they once knew and leave their safe place. Alongside key workers, designers were also put into that mainframe but were not praised as much as the other people in the frame. Coronavirus has created an economic earthquake where freelancers, businesses and big corporations would feel the wrath. A lot of freelancers from different industries became unstable and unsure what was going to happen next. Especially for the creative industries a sector that has been among the worst that has been affected by the pandemic and will be of the last to return to work. I don’t know about you man but it makes me nervous for my career. Part of me feels like doing DPS was a sign from God. Bare man I know are struggling with the fact they are graduating and thrown straight into the world. No more student loan, no more summer holidays, no more half terms, no more uni days discount a lot of ppl are finding it hard to adjust to becoming an adult finding a job rather than a student finishing university. It has been formed from the jump that we study study study and then a career and then RIP. Sad but true when you deep it. But when you dissect this it is so much more complex than we imagine. Like a jump rope when you jumped one before you know it you have to jump again and again and again until you pass out. I took part in a research session with Livity. There was 5 of us and then a facilitator who asked questions around Covid and the effects of it etc. It was a group discussion to get all our thoughts and insights into how it's affecting people. Throughout this insight session, the main topic we spoke about were youth voice and participation; non formal learning; health and wellbeing; employment. We were all of the same age range but were in different educational positions. Even though we were all from different networks, we all still felt to withhold somewhat responsibility. Sharing and hearing other ppls thoughts and views how covid has affected them and what be put in place in order to sustain the normality we had before was very interesting. It made me realise as student, as a young Sikh lady, we live in a world where ppl are so blindsided and beyond uneducated we have so much work to alter this. As a graphic designer I feel that design will be able to visually communicate with ppl in order for ppl to open their eyes to the wass that occurs on the daily. Nowadays ppl always attract to ‘aesthetically pleasing visuals’ . Lets break this down real quick. “the philosophical study of beauty and taste, what an individual perceives something as beautiful and compelling” Ppl will open their eyes and view things which they like. Thats fine. It’s when they are presented the things they don’t like and have to avoid is when you become ignorant and rude to the matters at hand. In this country particularly we can start with the systematic racism that ppl thing don’t exists. Its just pure ignorance and its uncomfortable for them because it is not part of ‘their aesthetic’. There’s bare more to list but you can google them on your own time. And how it is when matters do get showcased, every day it becomes less spoken about and the subject becomes smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller and so unnoticed because ppl stop talking abut it that it just disappears like it never happened in the first place. I have heard hardly any conversations involving the matters of the farmers protest in India, https://www.refinery29.com/en-ca/2020/12/10216561/india-farmers-protests. Until it is right in your face and hard to avoid is when it gets noticed. Ppl need to start educating themselves for the better of this society. We are all part of one network. Whether you believe it to be part of the government, the illuminati, the free masons, NASA (once again each to their own) we are still part of how the world goes round (unless you think the earth is flat then just move along). image reference:
